Wolverines one strike away from the win

By Coach Heather Struve
The South O’Brien Softball Team visited Trinity Christian on Friday June 28 for a War Eagle Conference matchup.
Both teams were held scoreless for the first inning. In the second inning the Tigers put an earned run on the board to take the initial lead. In the top of the third Tawni Wulf drew a leadoff walk and Lindsey Einck bunted to advance Wulf, but the throw was errant and Wulf ended up scoring and Einck made it to third. Einck scored when Ashlynn Gunnerson grounded out to shortstop. The score was now 2-1 in favor of the Wolverines.
The score would remain the same until the bottom of the seventh when Trinity had girls on second and third and there were two outs and two strikes on the batter. On the next pitch the Trinity batter hit a line drive to right center and scored both baserunners to win the game 3-2.
This was a nail biter all the way through. Both teams played excellent defense, only committing one error each. There were a couple of big highlights. Addison Hedberg had a great double play in the fourth when she caught a ball in shallow centerfield and threw it home to get the tagout. In the seventh inning Ashlynn Gunnerson was covering first base on a bunt situation when she threw to third base to left fielder Marissa Ebel to get the tagout.
We were playing very smart defense the entire night. Pitching was also excellent all night long. Brooklyn Edwards gets saddled with the loss even though she had a great night. She gave up six hits and three earned runs, walked one and struck out one. She did her job and made the other team put it in play and relied on her defense.
The only reason we did not win this game was that we did not hit the ball ourselves. Edwards and Wulf were the only two Wolverine batters to get credited with a hit on the night. For as well as we pitched and played defense, we hit just as bad. The Wolverines are now 9-10 overall and 4-5 in the conference. We are looking forward to a big last week of regular season play with four games, three of them at home. We will be playing Harris-Lake Park at home for the first round of Districts on July 8th at 7:00.
