South O’Brien girls take down HMS
By Coach Heather Struve
On Monday, June 24 the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Hawks came to Paullina to play a non-conference game, even though the game was supposed to be at Hartley. The field in Hartley was under water, so the Wolverines were the visitor on the scoreboard on their own field.
South O’Brien got off to a quick start, scoring three runs in the top of the first, with Brooklyn Edwards’ double being the big hit of the inning. HMS scored two runs of their own in the first to cut the lead to 3-2. Neither side scored in the secondnd inning.
In the third the Wolverines added four more runs. Edwards cranked out a solo homer. In the fourth Edwards once again got on base with a single and her courtesy runner Kelsee Warnke scored a run to make the score 8-2 after four innings of play. HMS scored a single run in the fifth to cut it to 8-3.
In the top of the sixth the Wolverines blew up the scoreboard with eight runs! They combined three hits, three walks and two hit batters together to do the damage and make the score 16-3. HMS made a little run in the sixth, but could only muster three runs and the game ended after six innings of play by the 10-run rule at 16-6.
Edwards got the win on the mound. She was dialed in and gave up eight hits, struck out two and walked five. Conditions were not ideal with the 110 degree heat index. Three of those walks came in the final inning. It was great how she pushed through and showed everyone how she really wanted this one. She also went 3-for-4 at the dish to help her own cause. She almost hit the cycle with a home run, a double and a single. She was credited with two RBI’s. Also hitting singles were Abby Nelson, Reese Farquhar, Marissa Ebel, and Lindsey Einck.
