Wolverine golf teams gain split with Hinton
The South O’Brien Girls and Boys Golf Teams split their final home War Eagle Conference dual with Hinton on Thursday, April 25 at Primghar Golf & Country Club. It was Senior Night, and a big fan base came out to cheer on the Wolverines. As usual, it was another cold and windy night for golf. The boys won by four strokes, 194-198, and the girls lost 209-239. We will have to play our best to be competitive at the WEC Tournaments on Monday (boys) and Tuesday (girls) at Willow Creek in Le Mars. That may be a tough challenge coming off of Prom and the After Prom Party this weekend.
The Hinton girls are undefeated in duals on the season and were just too much for South O’Brien. The Wolverines, however, carded a 239, 10 strokes below their average. Sophomore Lindsey Einck earned runner-up honors with a 50 to lead the Wolverines. She was just one stroke from Hinton’s Ashlyn Kramer, who took medalist honors with a 49. Sophomore Chloe Hustedt shot a 58, just one stroke off her season best. The theme tonight was to play well but card one bad hole. Take away the 9, 11, 11, and 12 from each of their scorecards, and we look like a different team. We need to find a way to eliminate those blow-up holes. That often comes with experience. The girls are now 3-6 in conference play.
Team Scores: Hinton 209, South O’Brien 239.
Medalist: Ashlyn Kramer (Hinton) 49, Runner-up: Lindsey Einck (SO’) 50, 3rd: Andie Jo Walker (Hinton) 53, 4th: Crayten Stusse (Hinton) 53.
Other SO’ scores: Chloe Hustedt, 58, 6th; Raegan Plagge, 63, 9th; Shayli Johnson, 68, 10th.
Although Hinton took the top two medals, the Wolverines put together a team score to beat Hinton by four strokes. The Wolverines also filled the 3rd-8th spots on the leaderboard. Senior David Bottjen and junior Derek Paulsen tied with 48s. Derek took the 3rd place medal and David the 4th place medal after a handicap hole card playoff. Junior Carter Halverson and senior Aaron Funkhouser carded 49s to tie for 5th place. Jace Kleinwolterink shot 51 to secure his spot in the varsity lineup for post-season play. Sophomore Alex Griebel shot a 52–not his best night, but he was able to edge out four Hinton golfers. All of our guys are capable of playing better than they did tonight, but we will take the win. The boys are now 5-4 in conference play.
Team Scores: South O’Brien 194, Hinton 198.
