Strong Westerner squads top South O’Brien golfers
The South O’Brien Girls and Boys Golf Teams traveled to Akron for a WEC dual with Akron-Westfield on Tuesday, April 22. The unfamiliar course and trees created some challenges for the Wolverines. Akron-Westfield won both duals and pocketed all eight medals. The Westerner boys are undefeated in WEC duals this season and the girls are 6-1. The SO’ boys are 4-4 and the girls are 3-5.
Sophomores Lindsey Einck and freshman Raegan Plagge led the Wolverines shooting 57s. Lindsey hit OB on two different holes, which made it difficult for her to get on the medal board. Raegan’s 57 tied a personal best. Sophomore Chloe Hustedt shot a 63, which is right at her average for the season. Junior Shayli Johnson shot better than her average, finishing with a 66. The girls gained some good experience tonight working through an unfamiliar course with tree-lined fairways and some difficult greens. We’re starting to eliminate the ‘blow-up’ holes, which was a big problem at the beginning of the season.
Team Scores: A-W 195, South O’Brien 243.
(Meet Honors all from A-W) Medalist: Josie Smith 48, Runner-up: Lainey Schuknecht 48, 3rd: Allie Swoyer 49, 4th: Peyton Vanderhelm 50.
SO’ scores: Lindsey Einck, 57, 6th, (tie); Raegan Plagge, 57, 6th (tie); Chloe Hustedt, 63, 9th; Shayli Johnson, 66, 10th.
Senior David Bottjen and sophomore Alex Griebel both carded 45s, putting them in a tie for 5th place. They were just two strokes out of the medals against a tough Akron team tonight. Juniors Derek Paulsen and Jace Kleinwolterink shot 47s to tie for 8th place. We had to punch out of the trees too often tonight, and we struggled on the greens. Our team score, more than 20 strokes higher than last night, reflects that. Even so, it was good to get some experience on a different course, playing with some top-notch golfers.
Team Scores: A-W 162, South O’Brien 184.
