Wolverines unable to make one last run against winning HMS girls


In a game of runs, it was Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s surge midway through the third quarter that tipped the game in the Hawks’ favor and spelled defeat for South O’Brien by the score of 53-43. The non-conference game between War Eagle Conference opponents was played January 21 at Hartley.
HMS controlled the first quarter and led 13-3 early in the second. The Wolverines then scored 14 straight points before the Hawks closed strong to lead 20-18 at the half. South O’Brien carved out a 30-26 advantage with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter but HMS finished the period on a 14-1 run to lead 40-31. The Wolverines were able to get no closer than seven points in he final quarter.
South O’Brien was 15-of-42 from the field to shoot 36 percent. The Hawks made eight of 21 field goals from long range as part of their 40 percent shooting (18-of-45). The Wolverines were 5-of-16 from deep and 8-of-14 at the free throw line. HMS sank nine of its 16 charity tosses.
Reese Farquhar was far-and-away the leading scorer for South O’Brien with 21 points. Lindsey Einck and Abby Woodall each tallied five points with Addison Hedberg and Chloe Hustedt adding four apiece and Abby Nelson and Cassidy Horstmann two each. Wolverines with two assists each were Nelson, Hedberg, Einck, Farquhar and Hustedt.
South O’Brien lost the rebound battle 34-18. Farquhar collected six rebounds, Einck four and Hustedt three. Nelson made three steals and Hedberg and Farquhar each came away with two. The turnover totals showed HMS with 14 and the Wolverines with 15.
