Remsen St. Mary’s finishes strong to top South O’Brien boys
For the second game of the week, the South O’Brien boys basketball team faced a War Eagle Conference contender on the road. Again the Wolverines came up a bit short, falling to Remsen St. Mary’s 63-54 December 13 at Remsen. The teams were tied at 44-all entering the fourth quarter where St. Mary’s was able to gain some breathing room. This was the first game for either team that counted in the conference standings.
Statistically, the Hawks finished with a slight edge in most categories. The host team out-shot South O’Brien 49 percent (24-of-49) to 45 percent (22-of-49). St. Mary’s drained six three-pointers, the Wolverines five. At the free throw line South O’Brien was 5-of-6 and the Hawks 9-of-15.
Derek Paulsen scored 31 points for the visitors. Next high was Gabe Moermond with seven points. Scoring five points apiece were Brody Van Beek and Caden Wittrock. Jaden Kreber added four points and Brady Riedemann two. Moermond and Reese Lundquist each notched three assists.
St. Mary’s pulled down 28 rebounds. The Wolverines collected 24 with Paulsen grabbing seven, Riedemann five and Kreber four. Wittrock made two steals as the Hawks turned the ball over nine times. Lundquist recorded a blocked shot. South O’Brien committed 13 turnovers.
