MMCRU gets the better of Wolverine boys
In an early-season battle of undefeateds, MMCRU defended the home court, topping South O’Brien 74-64 December 10 at Marcus. Each team entered the contest with a 2-0 record. There is more yet to be decided as this meeting between War Eagle Conference contenders does not count in the conference standings.
The Royals jumped out to 23-11 advantage after one quarter. By halftime they had pushed the lead to 18 at 42-24. In the third quarter the Wolverines cut the lead in half by outscoring MMCRU 24-15. The Royals were able to win the final quarter by a point to come away with the 10-point win.
Both teams shot the ball well. MMCRU was a blazing 32-of-54 to finish at 59 percent. The Wolverines were at an even 50 percent with 22 baskets in 44 attempts. South O’Brien was 7-of-20 from deep while the Royals went 4-for-16. The Wolverines missed only one of their 14 free throw tries and MMCRU was 6-of-12 at the line.
Scoring honors went to Derek Paulsen with 32 points. The top point-getter for the Royals was Brayson Miller with 24. Other scorers for South O’Brien were Jaden Kreber with 10 points, Reese Lundquist with six, Brody Van Beek and Gabe Moermond with five apiece, Caden Wittrock with four and Brett Evans with two. Paulsen had four assists, Wittrock and Kreber two each.
With 30 turnovers, the Wolverines had nearly double the number committed by MMCRU, which had 17. Getting two steals apiece were Moermond, Paulsen and Kreber.
With the teams shooting well, there still were rebounds and South O’Brien acquired 23 of them compared to 19 for the Royals. Paulsen grabbed five, Moermond and Kreber four each and Wittrock and Lundquist three each.
