Wolverines absorb WEC loss to Akron-Westfield
South O’Brien lost its first War Eagle Conference match of the season, falling 3-0 to Akron-Westfield September 12 at Paullina. The set scores for the Westerners were 25-20, 25-17 and 25-18. The loss dropped the Wolverines to 3-1 in the conference and 3-6 overall.
The home team fell behind 4-0 in the first set and trailed 20-11 at one point prior to closing the gap to 24-20. The first part of set two was close with the Wolverines holding the lead at 9-8. The teams were tied 11-11 before Akron-Westfield scored six of the next seven points on the way to going up 2-0 in the match. The third set featured another slow start by the Wolverines who trailed 7-1. The Westerners later went on a 6-0 run to gain a 16-9 advantage. They kept South O’Brien at arm’s length the rest of the way to complete the sweep.
Raegan Plagge recorded nine kills and Chloe Hustedt seven. Tori Schueller made a solo block and assisted on two others. Addi Hedberg dug up 14 Akron-Westfield attacks. Ashlynn Gunnerson and Reese Farquhar notched 11 digs apiece. Gunnerson’s set assist total was 21. Seeing success at the service line were Plagge who was 8-of-8 and Taylor Wulf who went 7-of-7 with an ace.
