Defense played a key role as South O’Brien was able to pick up a win over MMCRU September 10 at Marcus. Set scores for the Wolverines in the War Eagle Conference match were 25-18, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-18.
“Our girls had a big win against MMCRU,” said South O’Brien head coach Amy Schmidt. “We were able to elevate our defense and get quite a few blocks. We also had a good number of touches that didn’t result in direct blocks but kept the ball in play and eventually were able to score off of an attack.
“Our team chemistry is coming together and the girls compliment each other in their play. Chloe (Hustedt) and Tori (Schueller) stood out offensively, but our other hitters, Raegan (Plagge) and Taylor (Wulf), also had a good night. Reese (Farquhar) and Raegan played well at the net and got quite a few blocks for us. Our back row played scrappy and I felt that they had a better night of passing. Overall it was just a great team effort.”
The 15 total blocks included one solo block and four assists from Farquhar and five block assists from Plagge. Farquhar was also busy in the back row with 23 digs. Addi Hedberg added 17 digs, Ashlynn Gunnerson 14 and Hustedt 13.
Schueller and Hustedt each recorded 12 kills with Schueller attacking at .350 efficiency and Hustedt at .318. Gunnerson assisted on 32 of the team’s 36 kills. The 89 percent serving featured a 13-of-13 night from Plagge and a 10-of-10 night from Abby Woodall.
