South O’Brien still frustrated at the plate

By Coach Heather Struve
The Wolverine Softball Team played its final regular season game on Friday, July 5 and ended up with a 5-0 loss to Woodbury Central.
Woodbury started the first inning off with a pair of runs to go up 2-0. And then neither team scored a run through the fifth inning. It was a very tight game. In the sixth WC tacked on a run and two more in the seventh to make the final score 5-0 in the Wildcats favor.
The Wolverines only put one girl in scoring position all night long. Four singles by Jinger Nieuwenhuis, Reese Farquhar, Ashlynn Gunnerson and Tawni Wulf did not prove to be enough. The Wildcats, on the other hand, had only had six hits, including a solo home run from Lexi Gilbert, but did enough damage on the bases for the win.
Brooklyn Edwards gets saddled with the loss, but she pitched well enough to get the win with a little offensive help from our team. She gave up five runs off of six hits, five walks and three strikeouts. It’s unfortunate that we can’t seem to get the clutch hits when we need them. Hopefully that will change on July 8 when we take on Harris-Lake Park in our tournament opener at Swanson.
