Wolverines capture walk-off victory over Sioux Central 15-14


In a high-scoring affair with Sioux Central, South O’Brien had the final say. The Wolverines scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to win 15-14 June 13 at Paullina.
The Rebels scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to take a one-run lead. South O’Brien had the top of the order coming up to bat in the bottom of the inning. Damian Villarreal beat out an infield single and Ben Woodall coaxed a walk. Mitchell Enger was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With one out, Brady Riedemann hit a ball to the third baseman, who came home with the throw. The catcher had to jump to catch the ball and Villarreal was able to score to tie the game. Ryan Fuller then hit a flare over the first base bag and Woodall danced home with the winning run.
Jaden Kreber went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double, four runs batted in and three runs scored. He also reached base on an error. Enger was 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI’s. He was twice hit by a pitch. Fuller’s 2-for-4 night included the game-winning RBI along with two walks, two runs scored and a reached-on-error.
Villarreal was on base six times. He had three hits, drew a walk and was hit by two pitches. The sophomore scored three runs and picked up an RBI. Gabe Moermond recorded a single, two RBI’s and a run scored. He walked once and also reached base on an error. Woodall drew three walks and scored two runs. He also had a hit and an RBI. Brady Riedemann and Willie Conley each notched a hit, an RBI and a run scored.
Brett Evans recorded a hit and scored a run.
The pitching and defensive stats were not quite as pretty for South O’Brien. For starters, the Wolverines were guilty of seven errors. Starting pitcher Fuller lasted 4-2/3 innings which included nine runs (five earned) on five hits, four walks and five hit batters. He retired four batters on strikes. Enger allowed three earned runs on a hit, a walk and a hit batter. Moermond walked two batters and struck out one, allowing two hits and two earned runs.
