Wolverines’ Paulsen golfs at Boys District Meet
Junior Derek Paulsen represented South O’Brien High School at the Boys 1A District Meet at Willow Creek Golf Course in Le Mars on Monday, May 13. Derek shot an 85 (40-45), which landed him in a tie for 30th place in a field of 56 golfers. It took a 74 to move on as an individual to the state meet next week.
Paulsen had a great season for the Wolverines, finishing with a 43.9 average. He found his way onto the leaderboard in six meets and earned 2nd team all-conference honors this season. Paulsen struggled with some penalties today, but he played some impressive golf. He chipped really well–even landed one in the hole from over 45 yards out, and that’s a tough part of the game to master.
Boyden-Hull, Gehlen Catholic, and Akron Westfield advanced to the 1A State Tournament, scheduled for May 20-21 at Ames Golf & Country Club. Remsen St. Mary’s just missed out, placing fourth. Having three War Eagle Conference teams finish in the top four spots today says a lot about how tough the conference is this year.
The top overall individual players from non-qualifying teams were Ethan Kuper from Bishop Garrigan and Drew Henderson from North Union who both shot 74s. They punched their tickets to play as individuals in Ames.
