Two Wolverine girls earn medals at WEC Golf Tournament
Although the weather offered some challenges, the War Eagle Conference Girls Golf Teams managed to finish the conference tournament after some adjustments on Tuesday, April 30 at Willow Creek Golf Course in Le Mars. Initially, the tournament was moved from 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. to beat the predicted afternoon weather. However, an unpredicted storm and lightning popped up in the morning, causing a delay after the girls played three of the 18 holes. After a 90-minute delay and hole reassignments, the teams headed back out to restart the tournament. With more weather predicted later in the day, the golfers played only the 9-hole red course.
Two SO’ golfers earned medals at the tournament. Freshman Raegan Plagge carded a career-best 52, earning 16th place. Sophomore Lindsey Einck medaled for the 2nd year in a row, placing 20th with a 53. Final all-conference teams will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
The top seven spots on the leaderboard were earned by girls who shot in the mid- to high-40s. With a little more experience our girls will get there. I am proud of the resilience our girls demonstrated today with the weather delay and while playing an unfamiliar and very soggy course. We shot 14 strokes under our average, so we are definitely moving in the right direction.
Hinton won the tournament decisively, beating Gehlen by eight strokes. The Wolverines finished seventh in a field of nine teams. HMS and Trinity did not have enough girls to post team scores.
