Close to 40 high school girls golfers hit the links at Newell Golf Course for the Class 1A Regional Final on Wednesday, May 18. It was a perfect day for golf–literally the best all season.
After 18 holes the home team, Newell-Fonda, took the win with a 370. Central Lyon earned 2nd with a 385. Both teams qualified for the Girls State 1A Golf Tournament set for Thursday and Friday in Marshalltown.
In the individual competition, Sidney Tritz from Remsen St. Mary’s earned medalist honors with an 86. Other state qualifiers include Grace Erickson of Newell-Fonda, Kylie Powers of IKM, Alexis Barber of Newell-Fonda and Mariah Gerleman and Jaina Groen of Central Lyon.
South O’Brien did not qualify as a team, but junior Samantha Wilbur competed individually. Wilbur had a great day but ended the day just five strokes short of qualifying for state. She carded an even 100 and finished 17th out of 39 golfers. Wilbur is a junior, so she will be back next year ready to fight for a spot to compete at state. She led the Wolverines this year, earning nine medals during the season. Her game has improved tremendously since she joined the team. Wilbur will come back even stronger as a senior because she is willing to work at her game during the offseason. Fortunately, all five varsity girls golfers will return next year, so the future looks bright for the Wolverines Girls Golf Team.
