Wolverine girls eighth at WEC Tournament, Wilbur 1st team all-conference
By Coach Kris Faust
The War Eagle Conference Girls Golf Tournament was held at The Ridge in Sioux Center on Tuesday, May 10. Although the winds were pretty strong, the temps were in the 60s and 70s, making it a great day for golf.
Junior Sam Wilbur shot a 99, which put her in a 3-way tie for 4th with Isabella Arens from Remsen St. Mary’s and Olivia Bunkers from Gehlen Catholic. However, Wilbur took the 6th place medal after a handicap card playoff. Wilbur also earned 1st team WEC honors for the season. Her 48.5 9-hole average put her in 3rd place among WEC girls golfers. Wilbur has really put a great season together. She is consistent meet after meet and has tremendously improved her ability to recover from adversity this season.
Sophomore Jinger Nieuwenhuis, who has never played in an 18-hole tournament, finished 28th with a 113 for the Wolverines and junior Whitney Einck finished 31st with a 114. Addison Brueggeman carded a 132 and Chloe Gergen a 153.
South O’Brien shot 458 as a team and placed 8th. Remsen St. Mary’s won the tournament with 400 total strokes.
The Wolverines have three girls new to golf this season. Playing the 18-hole conference tournament takes some grit, even for experienced golfers. I am proud of all of the girls for working so hard at the conference meet and throughout this season.
