South O’Brien throwers finish on top in girls portion of Wolverine Relays

Two South O’Brien stalwarts in the girls throwing events rewarded the home fans with a pair of wins May 5 as the Wolverine Relays were conducted in Paullina. Grace Fuhrman captured the discus and Maddie Johnson emerged victorious in the shot put.
South O’Brien was one of four teams to score over 100 points. The Wolverines’ total of 108 trailed Relays winner Alta-Aurelia (117 points), close runner-up Sioux Central (116) and Unity Christian (111).
Finishing second in the 400 meter hurdles was Taja Conley. Three relays also placed second: the 4×100 of Abby Schreck, Karlee Warnke, Kenna Bauer and Annika Jenness, the sprint medley of Maddy Friedrichsen, Schreck, Warnke and Taja Conley and the shuttle hurdle of Schreck, Abigail Nelson, Marissa Ebel and Bauer.
Johnson was third in the discus, joining third-place finishers Friedrichsen, Jalyssa Joines, Alyssa VanBeek and Riley Draper in the 4×200 and Bauer, Warnke, Takara Conley and Taja Conley in the distance medley.
Placing fourth were Regan Draper in the high jump, Warnke in the long jump, Jenness in the 200 meters and Schreck in the 100 meter hurdles. A pair of relays also came in fourth. They were the 4×400 of Takara Conley, Regan Draper, Bauer and Taja Conley and the 4×800 of Takara Conley, Fuhrman, Mariella Smith and Regan Draper.
Following a meet at Sioux Central on Monday, the girls travel to Lawton on Thursday for the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet which begins at 4:00 p.m.
