Slow start hampers Wolverines in loss to West Sioux boys
South O’Brien was unable to recover from scoring only one point in the first quarter and dropped a 58-42 decision to West Sioux. The War Eagle Conference game was played January 25 at Paullina.
The Wolverines trailed 13-1 at the end of the first quarter. The two teams played fairly evenly over the final three quarters but that opening frame proved to be an albatross around South O’Brien’s neck.
The Falcons enjoyed success from long range with 10 three-point baskets in 25 attempts. Overall West Sioux was 18-of-46 from the floor for 39 percent and 12-of-19 at the charity stripe. The Wolverines were 15-of-50 from the field for 30 percent. They made just two of 16 three-point tries and were 10-of-14 at the free throw line.
David Bottjen topped the Wolverine scoring with 17 points. Jake Wallin added nine points, Sawyer Honkomp six, Hudson Oolman and Boston Riedemann four apiece and Pete Bottjen two. The assists numbers included four from Riedemann, three from Ben Woodall and two from Oolman. Mason Coppock, with 14 points, led three West Sioux players in double figures.
Wallin pulled down 15 rebounds with Oolman grabbing another four and David Bottjen coming away with three. Riedemann led in steals with four. Oolman, Wallin and David Bottjen each swiped the ball three times. South O’Brien turned the ball over 10 times.
