Initial surge carries Gehlen past Wolverine girls
Gehlen Catholic set the tone early in posting a 60-32 win over South O’Brien January 28 at Paullina. The Jays led 20-9 after one quarter and never looked back. With the loss the Wolverines fell to 2-6 in War Eagle Conference and 3-15 overall.
South O’Brien shot 27 percent from the floor (10-of-37) and committed 21 turnovers. The host team made five of 17 shots from behind the three-point line and was 7-of-14 at the foul line. Gehlen went 23-for-61 from the field for 38 percent. The Jays connected on nine of their 22 trey attempts and five of their eight free throws. Gehlen was guilty of 10 turnovers.
Riley Draper gave the Wolverines seven points, five rebounds, two steals and one assist. Abby Schreck contributed seven points, three rebounds and an assist. Taja Conley scored six points and pulled down three rebounds to go along with an assist and a steal. Tatiana Conley’s five points accompanied an assist and a game-high nine rebounds. Alyssa Van Beek tallied an additional five points to go along with six rebounds. Marissa scored two points and grabbed a rebound. Samantha Wilbur also recorded a rebound and Takara Conley notched an assist and a steal.
Lauren Heying led Gehlen with 18 points and seven rebounds.
