Historical Society – The O’Brien County Historical Society will meet March 20th , at 7:3 0 p.m. in th e Assembly room of the court house in Primghar.
A banquet honoring O’Brien County’s 88 volunteer 4-H leaders is scheduled Saturday evening , March 31 at the Farm Bureau Building in Primghar. The county’s 32 4- H clubs and the 4- H Council will sponsor the banquet. According to Council Chairman, Callenius, Hospers, the program will include a good amount of fun as well as an inspirational presentation from Coach Bernard Cooper, Heelen High School Athletic Director. Coach Cooper, past president of the Iowa Football Coaches Association, has lectured and filled speaking engagements all over the United States.
1983 – 40 years ago
Casting completed; play rehearsals begin in April – This season, two veteran Primghar Community Playhouse members, Pat Adams and Brad Hoppe, will co-direct the 1983 summer production, “Flowers For Algernon.” Pat has been involved in the Playhouse since its infancy, appearing in “Blithe Spirit”, engaged as sound technician for “MASH”, and was assistant director for “The Mouse that’ Roared”. Brad returns to PCP after a year’s absence. He has directed numerous student productions in college and directed the previous PCP productions of “Blithe Spirit” and “MASH”. The 1983 production will begin rehearsal with a full-cast readthrough on Wednesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in the Primghar Care Center basement. A second readthrough is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m. Rehearsal dates are scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday beginning April 25th and continuing through opening night, slated for the end of June. Luella Behrens honored for 30 year service – Luella Behrens, a secretary in the Department of Social Services, O’Brien County Office, was recently honored for thirty years services to the State of Iowa. Jean Petersen, Director of the O’Brien County Office, presented Ms. Behrens with a service certificate signed by Governor Branstad and DSS Commissioner Michael Reagen. The certificate expressed gratitude and appreciation to Ms. Behrens for her thirty years of services to the State of Iowa and for personal dedication to the welfare of the citizens of the State of Iowa. Ms. Behrens has been employed by the Department of Social Services since January 12, 1953, and has been employed as a secretary in the O’Brien County Office since that time. Ms. Behrens resides in Primghar.
Jaycee cleanup Sat., March 26 – The annual Primghar Jaycee cleanup to be held March 26, will include a paper pick-up. Residents are asked to have paper tied or in boxes at the curb by. 8:00 a.m. The Thermo-Cell van of Sheldon will be at the paper collection center that day for loading at 9:45. Volunteers are needed to load the paper already stored and as it comes in from the pick-up. Spring cleanup articles do not include tree limbs or yard or garden rakings. The Jaycees ask that cleanup items be placed at the curb by 8:00 a.m. Appreciation for this generous service can be shown by purchasing a ticket for the annual dance or by making a contribution’ to support Jaycee projects. The date for the dance is April 9 at Paullina.
Tammy Tonner in Spelling Bee – Tammy Tonner, an 8th grade Primghar student, will compete in the Area 4 Spelling Bee on March 19 at 9:30 a.m. in the Sheldon’ High School Auditorium. Tammy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Tonner.
