Wolverines cut short HMS rally

South O’Brien built a four run lead over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and then had to hold on for a 6-5 War Eagle Conference baseball victory May 28 at Paullina. Relief pitcher Ryan Fuller picked the potential go-ahead baserunner off second to end the game.
The Wolverines struck first with a run in the opening frame. HMS took the lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. The home team responded with a four-spot in the bottom of the inning and then added another run in the third to go up 6-2. The Hawks had put three runs on the board in the seventh before South O’Brien snuffed out the rally.
Mitchell Enger was 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a pair of RBI’s. Ben Woodall went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Fuller was 1-for-2, was hit by a pitch and scored two runs. Jaden Kreber recorded a hit and an RBI and scored a run. Brady Riedemann had the other Wolverine hit and Carter Halverson scored a run. South O’Brien was successful on all nine steal attempts. Enger swiped four bases and Woodall two.
Woodall pitched 6-2/3 innings, allowing the five runs on eight hits. He struck out five batters, walked four and hit one. Just one of the runs was earned as the Wolverines were guilty of five errors. Fuller allowed a hit and walked two batters before the final pickoff.
