Sioux City West Tourney doesn’t go South O’Brien’s way
By Coach Heather Struve
South O’Brien played two games Saturday, June 1 at the Sioux City West Softball Tournament. The Wolverines lost twice, 7-3 to Woodbury Central, at 12-9 to the host West Wolverines.
Game 1: Woodbury Central 7, South O’Brien 3
In game 1 the Wolverines faced a tough offensive team in Woodbury Central. The Wildcats scored three runs in the first, one in the third and three in the sixth. The Wolverines on the other hand scored one run in each of the second, fifth and seventh innings.
South O’Brien had just one error in the field, but the bats need to come alive to allow us to score more runs. Lindsey Einck had the big hit of the game with a triple in the second. Brooklyn Edwards, Reese Farquhar, Abby Woodall and Abby Nelson all had singles. Edwards also had an RBI and Woodall scored a run.
Edwards started in the pitching circle and took the loss. She gave up 11 hits and seven earned runs, walked one and struck out one over five innings of play. Addison Hedberg came in and gave up one hit in the last two innings. We pitched well and played good enough defense. The offense just wasn’t there.
W. Central 3 0 1 0 0 3 0 – 7
S. O’Brien 0 1 0 0 1 0 1 – 3
Game 2: Sioux City West 12, South O’Brien 9
The Wolverines could only muster five hits and went through three pitchers in a high-scoring loss to Sioux City West. Tawni Wulf had two singles and two RBI’s to lead all hitters. Abby Nelson hit a double, had two RBI’s and scored twice. Brooklyn Edwards had a two-run single. Reese Farquhar hit an RBI single.
Addison Hedberg was the starting pitcher, but only lasted 1-1/3 innings. She was replaced by Wulf who also only went 1-1/3 innings. Edwards pitched the final 3-1/3 innings of play. Hedberg gave up only one hit, but walked four and gave up two runs. Wulf gave up six hits and six runs (three earned), walked one and struck out one. Edwards gave up seven hits and four earned runs, walked two and struck out three. The defense gave up just two errors.
This was a game we could have come away with a win, but we did not play with much energy all day. We were very flat and not very fired up to play. We have to find a way to get our energy at a higher level. The Wolverines are now 4-4 through two weeks of play and 2-1 in the conference.
