Wolverines are busy on the basepaths in win over HLP
South O’Brien used all means at their disposal to get runners on base against Harris-Lake Park. The Wolverines brought enough of those runners around to score to claim a 13-5 win over the host team June 23 at Lake Park.
“We had a great first inning, scoring nine runs off of three hits, six walks and two hit batters,” noted South O’Brien head coach Heather Struve. “We added another run in the third to go up 10-0 and looked to be in full command of the game when HLP ripped off five of their own runs, including two home runs. Other than that inning we held them scoreless and we also added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take the five inning eight-run rule win.”
The variety of ways the Wolverines got runners on base continued throughout the game. “HLP actually had one more hit than us, but their pitchers walked a total of 15, so we took advantage of that,” said Struve. “Abby Woodall and Ashlynn Gunnerson each hit a pair of base hits and Woodall had three RBI’s and Gunnerson two RBI’s. Reese Farquhar ripped a three-run double in the fifth to extend our lead. Alli Griebel got the win on the mound and did a super job of limiting walks with just two.” Griebel gave up six hits and struck out two batters. Only two of the Wolves’ runs were earned. The Wolverines committed just one error.
