Royals rally in the seventh to top South O’Brien
In an exciting, well-played game MMCRU scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 4-3 victory over South O’Brien June 25 at Remsen.
MMCRU scored a run in the first to take the early lead. The Wolverines responded in the top of the second with two runs of their own. Tawni Wulf started the inning with a single and with one out Lindsey Einck walked to put runners at first and second. With two outs Addison Hedberg pounded a clutch double to the right center fence to score both runners and put her team up 2-1.
The Royals got an unearned run across the plate in the third to tie things up 2-2. Neither team scored for the next couple innings. With one out in the sixth, Alli Griebel hit a single and was replaced by courtesy runner Kelsee Warnke. She advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single from Reese Farquhar to go up 3-2. South O’Brien held the hosts scoreless in the fifth and sixth. In the top of the sixth Wulf made a huge catch in right to end the inning. In the seventh the Wolverines made one error and MMCRU bunched four hits to score two and win the game.
“It was a really fun game to be a part of,” offered Wolverine head coach Heather Struve. “Wulf, along with fellow outfielder Addi Hedberg had some big catches and shortstop Abby Nelson was a part of 10 outs. Catcher Farquhar threw out a pair of runners trying to steal second. It would have been great to get the win tonight, but MMCRU has some great hitters and made the plays when they needed to. They are a good team and we were right there with them.”
Trying to contain those hitters was Griebel in the circle. She allowed 11 hits but walked only one and yielded just two earned runs. Griebel recorded two strikeouts. South O’Brien had a total of four errors.
