Wolverine shots go awry in loss to St. Mary’s girls
After a slow start by both teams, Remsen St. Mary’s picked up the scoring pace slightly more than did South O’Brien. That was enough to earn St. Mary’s a 41-35 win over the Wolverines January 16 at Paullina. The loss dropped South O’Brien to 3-11 on the season.
The game was tied 3-3 after one quarter. The Hawks led 17-12 at the half and were up 29-20 at the end of three quarters. The home team’s best scoring quarter was the final one, where the Wolverines tallied 15 points.
South O’Brien had difficulty finding the basket. The Wolverines made just a quarter of their shots, going 11-for-44 from the field. The Hawks were 38-percent shooters with 18 hoops in 48 tries. They made just one long-range shot while South O’Brien popped in three. The charity stripe saw the Wolverines go 10-for-17 and St. Mary’s 4-for-8.
The South O’Brien scoring showed Reese Farquhar with 13 points, Abby Nelson with five, Lindsey Einck and Cassidy Horstmann with four apiece, Abby Woodall with three and Addison Hedberg, Chloe Hustedt and BreLee Rasmussen with two each. Hedberg was the assists leader with four. The Hawks got 14 points from both Hallie Bunkers and Tessa Tentinger.
Each team committed 15 turnovers. Horstmann came away with three steals. The Wolverines lost the battle of the boards 34-23. Their top rebounders were Nelson with seven and Farquhar with six.
