Akron-Westfield fends off Wolverine girls



South O’Brien made a third-quarter run against Akron-Westfield but the Westerners responded and went to record a 59-50 win January 10 at Paullina. The Wolverines saw their War Eagle Conference record slip to 0-4.
Akron-Westfield held a 25-20 lead to start second half. The Wolverines scored 10 of the first 12 points in the third quarter to move in front 30-27. The Westerners would regain their footing, however, hitting a trio of treys and converting all three free throws after being fouled while attempting a three-pointer. It all resulted in a 43-34 lead for the visitors at quarter break. South O’Brien cut the deficit to six points early in the fourth but would get no closer.
Both teams shot well from long distance. Akron-Westfield connected on 11 of its 26 trey attempts. The Wolverines were 8-of-19 from beyond the arc. Overall, the home team went 15-for-40 to shoot 38 percent. The Westerners shot 39 percent with 17 baskets in 44 attempts. From the free throw line Akron-Westfield was 14-of-21 and the Wolverines 12-of-18.
The Wolverines were led in scoring by Reese Farquhar with 14 points. Abby Nelson added nine points, Lindsey Einck eight and Cassidy Horstman six. Addison Hedberg and Chloe Hustedt scored five points apiece with Abby Woodall tallying three points. Farquhar also was the assists leader with four. Recording two assists each were Nelson, Hedberg, Hustedt and Woodall.
South O’Brien finished with a 27-18 edge on the boards. Einck pulled down seven rebounds, Hustedt six, Farquhar five and Hedberg four. Nelson came away with three steals while Hegberg and Farquhar each had two and Horstman one. Akron-Westfield committed 12 turnovers and the Wolverines 17.
