South O’Brien splits girl-boy doubleheader with MVAOCOU
The South O’Brien varsity basketball teams closed out 2024 with a trip to Mapleton December 29 for a doubleheader against MVAOCOU. The Wolverines got a split as the boys won 71-38 but the girls lost to the undefeated Rams 59-31.
The boys were in control from the get-go, leading 22-4 after one quarter. South O’Brien also won each succeeding quarter with the final margin of victory being 33 points. The Leading scorers for the Wolverines were Derek Paulsen with 26 points, Jaden Kreber with 16 and Gabe Moermond with 14. Cade Schmidt and Tanner Dixon each scored 11 points for the Rams. The Wolverine boys enter the new year with a 4-2 record.
The MVAOCOU girls improved to 7-0 with the win. South O’Brien enters the Christmas break with a record of 2-6. The Wolverines failed to score in the first quarter and trailed 13-0. They responded in a big way with a 20-point second quarter to draw within five at 25-20 at intermission. MVAOCOU increased its scoring in the second half while the Wolverines could muster just 11 points.
