Looking back at 2024

Good start, solid finish boost Wolverines past MMCRU girls January 30, 2024

A good start gave South O’Brien the lead. Solid play at the end of the game allowed the Wolverines to hold on to it as they picked up a 49-45 victory over MMCRU January 30 at Paullina.
South O’Brien scored the final 11 points of the first quarter to go up 17-9. The Royals cut into the margin in the second quarter and then took a one-point lead at 29-28 midway through the third. The Wolverines regained the lead moments later and never again relinquished it.
“I thought tonight was our best performance of the year,” praised South O’Brien head coach DJ Hansen. “We really set the tone in the first quarter. MMCRU ran some man against us and we executed well and got lots of good looks at the basket. The second quarter we stalled a bit as they went to zone, but after halftime our girls did a much better job of moving the ball around and attacking the gaps. Defensively, we played a pretty good game as well. We let Jadyn Young get too many good looks. She ended up with five three-pointers with two of them being unguarded. We also let them penetrate baseline a few times but (Tia Tentinger and Kylie Harpenau) for MMCRU are really good players who are tough to contain.”
The Wolverines limited their turnovers to 11. “Our biggest improvement was taking care of the ball,” noted Hansen. “We also did a great job at the end of the game. We haven’t been in a lot of those this year so I was impressed with our poise at the end of the game. Really great team win. Everyone contributed. Great to get a win on senior night for our lone senior, Marissa Ebel. She is one tough cookie. She has battled all year for us and deserved this one.”
Addison Hedberg and Reese Farquhar each scored 16 points to pace the Wolverine attack. Ebel and Lindsey Einck scored six points apiece with Abby Nelson adding four points and Chloe Hustedt one. Hustedt kept the ball moving to the tune of six assists while Hedberg added three dimes.
Grabbing seven rebounds apiece were Farquhar and Hustedt. Nelson corralled four caroms and Ebel three. Hustedt came away with three steals while Hedberg swiped the ball twice.
South O’Brien was 18-of-52 from the field to shoot 35 percent. The Wolverines made five of their 19 three-point attempts and were 8-of-17 at the free throw line.
