Hawks win in-county tussle against South O’Brien girls


South O’Brien was outplayed by Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in the first and third quarters of their War Eagle Conference contest December 17 at Paullina. The Wolverines were unable to offset that enough in the other two quarters and ended up on the short end of a 51-41 score against their in-county rivals. With the loss, South O’Brien slipped to 0-2 in the conference and 2-5 on the season.
The Wolverines went 14-for-60 from the field to shoot 23 percent. HMS closed at 34 percent shooting with 17 buckets in 50 tries. The Hawks’ seven three-point baskets were four more than South O’Brien could manage. The teams combined to shoot 35 free throws. The Wolverines were 10-of-20 from the stripe while HMS went 10-for-15.

Chloe Hustedt topped South O’Brien in scoring with 10 points. Close behind were Reese Farquhar with nine points and Lindsey Einck with eight. Abby Nelson tallied five points. Addison Hedberg and Cassidy Horstmann each scored three points with Abby Woodall adding two points and BreLee Rasmussen one. Hedberg and Farquhar each had two assists.
The teams were fairly even when it came to rebounds and turnovers. The Hawks held a slim 40-36 edge on the glass. Farquhar was the game’s top rebounder with 17 boards. Einck collected five rebounds, Rasmussen four and Hustedt three. The Wolverines turned the ball over 19 times with HMS committing 18 turnovers. Nelson swiped the ball three times while Farquhar and Woodall each made two steals. Farquhar blocked a shot.
Abby Douma registered 12 blocks for the Hawks who were led in scoring by Kylee Schiphoff with 15 points.
