Late scoring drought costs Wolverine girls in loss to GLR

George-Little Rock proved to be an ungrateful guest. South O’Brien entertained the Mustangs in the home opener and the visitors carried away a 41-28 non-conference victory December 3 at Paullina.
The home team began well and enjoyed a 15-8 lead after one quarter of play. George-Little Rock cut into the Wolverine lead which was 28-26 going into the fourth quarter. That’s when it went sour for South O’Brien as the team failed to register a single point over the final eight minutes.
Neither team shot well but the Mustangs had the better of it. The visitors were 13-of-45 (30 percent) including 2-of-18 from three-point range. South O’Brien made only seven of their 42 shot attempts for 17 percent. The Wolverines hit just two of their 13 long range launches. South O’Brien did better at the foul line with 12 makes in 21 attempts. George Little Rock was 13 of 29 from the stripe.
The balanced Wolverine scoring showed Addison Hedberg with seven points, Lindsey Einck and Chloe Hustedt with five apiece, Abby Woodall with four, Reese Farquhar and Cassidy Horstmann with three each and Abby Nelson with one. Notching one assist apiece were Nelson, Hedberg, Farquhar, Woodall and Horstmann. Providing a one-two scoring punch for the Mustangs were Lindsey Haken with 15 points and Wyleigh Steenhoven with 14.
The turnover totals were similar as the Wolverines committed 22 and George-Little Rock 19. Nelson came away with four steals and Hortmann stole the ball three times. The Mustangs’ rebounding edge mirrored the final score: 41-28. Hustedt led South O’Brien with eight rebounds while Farquhar grabbed six. Hustedt also blocked a shot as did Einck.
