South O’Brien girls basketball has experience returning
The South O’Brien varsity girls basketball team opens the season Tuesday, November 26 with a non-conference game at Alta-Aurelia. DJ Hansen is entering his second season as Wolverines head coach and the team is coming off a 4-18 record from a year ago and a 10th-place finish in the War Eagle Conference.
Returning starters for South O’Brien are senior Abby Nelson and juniors Reese Farquhar (leading scorer last season), Addison Hedberg, Chloe Hustedt and Lindsey Einck. Farquhar and Hedberg each averaged just under seven points per game last year while Einck averaged four points and six rebounds. Hustedt came away with 39 steals a year ago while averaging four points a game. “She had a great offseason,” said Hansen.
Sophomore Abby Woodall is also a returning letterwinner. Rounding out the team are sophomores Brelee Rasmussen and Raegan Plagge and freshman Tori Schueller.
“Great kids, character,” said the Wolverine head coach. “We’re more confident in ourselves compared to last season.” Hansen describes the team as having average athleticism with some height. “We need to continue to improve our ball handling and taking care of the ball and also our outside shooting,” he said.
Hansen, who is being assisted by Kyle Paulsen, sees Hinton and George-Little Rock as the War Eagle Conference title favorites for the upcoming season with Akron-Westfield also having a strong team.
