Turnovers are costly as HMS outscores Wolverines

South O’Brien’s middle was not bad, but it couldn’t make up for a poor beginning and ending.
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn scored the first 16 points of the game and the final 12 to outscore the Wolverines 44-26 October 4 at Hartley. With the loss, the Wolverines fell to 0-4 in Class A District 1 and 0-6 overall.
“We got down two scores earlier in the game,” said Wolverine head coach Mark Fuhrman. “We were able to rebound quickly and were within a score at halftime. Third quarter we had a chance to tie or even take the lead but our third fumble of the night stopped the drive at the five yard line.”
The Hawks recovered three fumbles and intercepted two passes. “Offensively the turnovers really hurt us,” said Fuhrman. “Defensively, we continue to give up big plays on third and fourth down that would get our defense off the field.”
Jaden Kreber had his hand in two second quarter touchdowns. He rushed for a score and then threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Derek Paulsen. Jordan Jenness accounted for the Wolverines third touchdown of the second quarter on a six-yard run.
Kreber and Paulsen connected on another long scoring pass in the third quarter. The two teamed up again on the two-point conversion and South O’Brien trailed by just six at 32-26. Then came the turnover in the red zone with HMS driving the length of the field to increase the lead to 12 points early in the fourth quarter.
Kreber threw for a total of 205 yards and Paulsen caught six passes for 151 yards. Brody Van Beek had 47 yards on four receptions and Jenness ran for 32 yards on 12 carries.
On the defensive side, Jenness recorded 24 total tackles and Teagen Bahrenfuss 18. Paulsen and Van Beek each intercepted a pass.
South O’Brien returns home to take on Gehlen Catholic October 11 at Paullina. The Jays defeated Sibley-Ocheyedan 34-26 Friday night and remains unbeaten in District play at 4-0. “Gehlen next week is going to be a tough test,” remarked Fuhrman. “We need to be hitting on all cylinders.”
