South O’Brien won two of its four matches at the HMS Volleyball Tournament held September 28 at Hartley. on September 21 at Hawarden. The Wolverines were one of three teams to pick up two wins in pool play The tiebreaker put them in second place in Pool B and they advanced to take on Rock Valley, which won Pool A. South O’Brien lost that match in three sets to end their day.
The Wolverines opened against Gehen Catholic and got off to an ominous start, losing 21-5. They rallied, however, to best the Lady Jays 21-17 in set two and went on to win the deciding third set 15-12.
Next up was another War Eagle Conference foe in Trinity Christian. South O’Brien defeated the Tigers in straight sets 21-16 and 21-17. The Wolverines entered their final pool-play match against Newell-Fonda with a chance to win the Pool B but the Mustangs were decisive 21-14 and 21-15 victors and it was they that won the pool.
In the match with the Rockets, South O’Brien got off to a good start, winning the first set 24-23. The Wolverines has chances to close out the match in two but Rock Valley pulled out a 28-26 win. It was all Rockets in the deciding set as they won 15-5.
Meanwhile, Newell-Fonda downed Pool A runner-up Okoboji in three sets and went on to win the championship with a 23-21 and 21-6 victory over the Rockets.
