Three members from the South O’ Brien FFA Chapter, Bode Bailey, Bensen Rohwer, and Ethan Schwarz, participated in the State Nursery/Landscape Contest. FFA teams from 18 chapters including 67 individuals participated in this year’s Career Development Event designed to provide students an opportunity to display their agricultural knowledge and skills in the area of Nursery/Landscape.
The event consisted of a general knowledge exam, a landscape estimation practicum, identification of nursery materials (plants, disorders, equipment and supplies), equipment operations practicums, and a team skills challenge.
South O’Brien placed 14th overall with a Bronze rating, 2nd in Equipment Demonstration (how to safely operate a Stihl string trimmer and ZTR mower), and 5th in the Team Challenge of demonstrating how to plant a tree.
Bode Bailey stated “ To prepare for the contest we studied photos for the identification portion of the contest, and did research on the topics we would be tested on. The team section this year was tree planting. Each team had to actually plant a tree, demonstrating all of the steps.”
