Gehlen’s offense is active late to put away Wolverines
Gehlen Catholic put an end to its contest with South O’Brien by scoring seven runs in the bottom of sixth inning to win 13-3 July 3 at Granville. The Wolverines brought in two relievers that inning but were unable to stem the tide.
South O’Brien took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame as Ben Woodall drew a walk and was driven in by Gabe Moermond. The Jays tied the game in the third and then scored five times in the fourth. The Wolverines drew closer in the fifth as Willie Conley and Jaden Kreber both scored on a fielder’s choice with Ben Woodall picking up an RBI.
Moermond, Conley, Mitchell Enger and Trevor Fiddelke each had one hit. Woodall walked twice while Kreber, Fiddelke and Damian Villarreal each received one free pass.
Alex Griebel got the starting pitching nod. He was relived in the sixth by Moermond with nobody out, a runner on base and two runs in. Griebel’s final line showed nine runs on six hits with five of the runs being earned. He walked five batters, hit five and struck out two. Moermond got an out but walked four, allowed a hit and was charged with four runs, three of which were earned. Fiddelke took the mound but gave up two hits as Gehlen sealed the deal. The Wolverines’ cause was hindered by their five errors.
