South O’Brien boys collect eight top finishes and team title at Wolverine Relays
The South O’Brien boys track and field athletes won a total of eight events at their own Wolverine Relays held May 2 at Paullina. Those successes helped the Wolverines cruise to the team title as well. The home team scored 189 points to easily outdistance second-place Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s total of 121. George-Little Rock and Trinity Christian rounded out the compact field. Alta-Aurelia, Sioux Central and West Bend-Mallard were scheduled to compete but were instead at their conference meet which had been postponed to the May 2 date.
The Wolverines took first in all three field events (the discus competition was cancelled due to the soggy conditions created by earlier rains.) Josh Gnade won the shot put, Damian Villarreal captured the long jump and Willie Conley was tops in the high jump.
On the track, Gabe Moermond finished first in the 800 meters. The hurdle events went into South O’Brien’s column as Brennan Billick took the 110’s and Conley the 400’s. The two also teamed with Brody Van Beek and Cole Cox to win the shuttle hurdle relay. Cole Tjossem and Caden Wittrock joined Villarreal and Van Beek on the winning sprint medley relay team.
There were plenty of runner-up finishes for the Wolverines as well, including Jaden Kreber in the high jump, Billick in the long jump and 400 hurdles, Van Beek in the 110 hurdles, Brett Evans in the 200 and Trayton Cobb in both the 1600 and 3200. The Wolverines’ second-place relays were the 4×100 of Villarreal, Wittrock, Cox and Tjossem, the 4×200 of Moermond, Asa Flinders, Cox and Jordan Jenness and the 4×800 of Kreber, Moermond, Austin Negus and Corbin Warnke.
