Many of the South O’Brien FFA members involved in SDSU Little “I” contests competed in two events.
The Range Plant ID team had to judge 50 different plants and place them accordingly. The 3rd place team consisted of Reese Farquhar (3rd), Abby Woodall (10th), Chloe Hustedt (5th), and Ben Woodall (12th). Abby Woodall stated, “ We studied for the tests during discovery time. Some of the plants looked alike so it made the contest difficult, but it was fun to be able to compete in the contest with my friends.” The 4th place team consisted of Tawni Wulf (15th), Ashton Hunt (14th), and Caden Wittrock (13th).
The Ag Mechanics team consisted of John Puhrmann (20th), Josh Gnade, and Eliot Boardman. This contest is designed to prepare students with a strong knowledge base and the ability to comprehend the interaction of complex systems with electrical wiring, tractor parts identification, and an exam
The Dairy Cattle judging contest provided an opportunity for students with an interest in the dairy industry to gain practical experience in the visual appraisal of dairy cattle, as well as evaluation and management decision making based on pedigree information and sire information. This team consisted of Logan Dau, Jacob DeBerg, Kate Dau, and Austin Negus. Austin Negus stated, “ The contest was very difficult for me because I had no experience on what to look for in a dairy cow. Mr. Kumm helped me and my teammates out, and then we practiced with a livestock judging app.”
After a long day of judging, the group was treated to some SDSU ice cream before heading home.
