FFA Competes At SDSU

On Friday April 5th, twenty members of the South O’ Brien FFA Chapter attended the SDSU Little “I” and competed in Meat Judging, Vet Science, Milk Quality and Products, Agronomy, and Floriculture.
The Meats team judged four classes of carcasses, wholesale cutts, and retail cuts, identified twenty retail cuts, and answered two sets of questions. The team consisted of Austin Negus, Gabe Moermond, Will Stout, BreLee Rasmussen, Sarah Puhrmann, Jasper Johnson, Hunter Lange placed 10th.
The team consisted of Gabe Moermond, Will Stout, BreLee Rasmussen, Sarah Puhrmann, Jasper Johnson, and Hunter Lange competed in the Vet Science contest which consisted of a fifty-question written exam and identification of sixty-five pieces of equipment used in veterinary practices, and breeds of animals.
There were four parts of the Milk Quality and Products contest. Contestants were required to taste ten different milk samples for flavor defects, determine the fat content of five milk samples, and identify five types of cheese, along with a written test. Team members were Logan Dau, Jacob DeBerg, and Kate Dau.
The purpose of the Agronomy judging contest is to provide an opportunity for students to gain an interest in understanding agronomy. Ben Woodall and Caden Wittrock participated in this contest. Ben stated, “ We judged the quality of specific seeds and crops then placed them, identified crop and weed seeds and plants, and took a written exam to finish out the contest.”
The Floriculture team members were Reese Farquhar, Abby Woodall, Chloe Hustedt, Tawni Wulf, and Ashton Hunt. Reese stated, “ To study for this contest I used a sideshow to study the different plants we would possibly need to identify. We also had to make a floral arrangement consisting of different flowers and fillers, and then calculate a price for our arrangement.”
