Wolverines fall to Westwood in baseball opener
Westwood broke open a close game with six runs in the fifth inning to defeat South O’Brien 10-5 May 19 at Sloan. It was the season opener for the Wolverines while Westwood leveled its record at 1-1.
South O’Brien got the season off to a good start with three runs in the first inning. The Rebels tied the game with a three-spot in the bottom of the second. The Wolverines responded with a pair of runs in the third before Westwood answered with a tally in the fourth. The Rebels then had their six-run eruption and blanked the visitors the rest of the way.
Dain Moermond notched a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Brady Riedemann and Brody Van Beek each recorded one hit. None of the four hits were for extra bases. Van Beek also walked and Riedemann reached on an error. Ben Woodall drew a walk and scored twice. Trevor Fiddelke walked and scored. Damian Villarreal walked twice and Brett Evans drew one base-on-balls. Woodall stole two bases while Riedemann, Villarreal and Dain Moermond each swiped one.
Woodall pitched 4-2/3 innings and took the loss. Gabe Moermond tossed an inning-and-a-third, striking out two.
