Season ends for Wolverine girls at Regional Golf Final

The South O’Brien Girls Golf Team wrapped up their season at the Regional Final at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore on Wednesday, May 17. The Wolverines finished 4th in a field of eight teams with a score of 428. Newell-Fonda won the meet with a 368, and Akron-Westfield took runner-up honors with a 403. Both will advance to the State Meet in Boone May 25-26.
“Although the weather was beautiful and Spring Valley was in great shape, we just didn’t play like we know we can,” said South O’Brien Coach Kris Faust. “A few penalty strokes and some missed putts here and there make all the difference. We shot 11 strokes above our team totals at the WEC Tournament and Regional, so we knew our chances of making it through would be slim. I was pleased that we were able to come in 4th among some tough competition, however.” The Wolverines finished above Gehlen Catholic, HMS, Remsen St. Mary’s, and South Hamilton.
Seniors Sam Wilbur and Whitney Einck played well, but the competition pushed them to 8th and 12th respectively. The top six individuals move on to compete at the State Tournament. Said Faust, “It’s tough to have only a few strokes stand in their way of a State Tournament opportunity.” Wilbur was just five strokes out and Einck was seven strokes away.

Faust commented, “We had a great season with our crew of only five gals, winning the WEC tourney and extending our season to the Regional Final. We have a lot to be proud of this season.”
