South O’Brien boys qualify five events for State Track & Field Meet
The South O’Brien boys will be represented in five of the events to be contested at this week’s State Track & Field Meet. The Wolverine participants earned their way through their performances at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet held May 13 at Armstrong.
Event winners automatically qualify for the trip to Des Moines where the state meet unfolds May 18-20 at Drake Stadium. Taking that route was South O’Brien’s Willie Conley who captured both the high jump and the 400 meter hurdle competitions at Armstrong.
In addition to the first-place finishers, the next 14 best performances statewide from qualifying meet place winners move on to the state. In three events the Wolverines performed well enough to be included among those 14. Making the trip to state will be Boston Riedemann, who was runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles, the second place shuttle hurdle relay team of Grant Wagner, Brennan Billick, Conley and Riedemann and the sprint medley relay unit of Jacob Van Lith, Cole Tjossem, Hudson Oolman and Conley, which placed fourth at Armstrong.
South O’Brien athletes placed in a number of other events at the Qualifying Meet. Van Lith was runner-up in the long jump where Damian Villarreal placed seventh. Finishing fourth were Tjossem in the 100 meters and Wagner in the 110 meter hurdles. Josh Gnade recorded the sixth-best shot put throw and Brody Van Beek took seventh in the high jump. Oolman was the eighth-place finisher in the 200 meters.
The quartet of Van Lith, Riedemann, Oolman and Tjossem placed sixth in the 4×100 relay. The distance medley relay came in sixth as well, through the efforts of Jordan Jenness, Caden Wittrock, Van Beek and Jaden Kreber. In eighth place was the 4×200 relay of Jenness, Wittrock, Cox and Tjossem.
The Wolverines totaled 74 team points and finished fourth among the 14 teams competing. Fort Dodge St. Edmond sat atop the final team standings with 103 points.
