Defense sparks offense as Wolverine boys beat Harris-Lake Park
Defense turned into offense for South O’Brien in what turned into a 54-37 win over Harris-Lake Park January 10 at Paullina. The Wolverines were able to expand their six-point halftime lead. “Good ball pressure led to steals which led to run outs and scores,” explained South O’Brien head coach Kiley Yates. “The 10-0 run was the deciding factor in the game as we were basically even for most of the rest of the game.”
Willie Conley, who scored three baskets during that key stretch, finished with 13 points and five steals. Hudson Oolman scored 12 points, Boston Riedemann 10, David Bottjen seven, Sawyer Honkomp five, Derek Paulsen three and Ben Woodall and Dain Moermond two each. Honkomp and Conley each supplied three assists while Moermond and Bottjen had two apiece.
The Wolverines registered 44 percent shooting with 20 hoops in 46 tries. They drained a third of their 18 trey attempts and were 8-of-11 at the free throw line. Harris-Lake Park was limited to 29 percent shooting, going 14-for-49 from the floor. The Wolves popped in two long-range shots and seven of their 15 charity tosses. The turnover totals showed 13 for the Wolverines and 12 for Harris-Lake Park.
