Wolverines Win 14 – 7 over Warriors
The Wolverines picked up the first district win of the season last Friday night. The Wolverines hosted the Alta Aurelia Warriors and came up with a 14-7 win.
The first half provided all of the scoring for the Wolverines. It started on the first drive of the game with a 14 play drive. Jacob VanLith finished it with a 2 yard quarterback sneak. The extra point kick was wide right but the Wolverines led 6-0 with 6:18 to go in the first quarter.
The Wolverine defense recovered a fumble on the Warriors offensive series and were able to score with 1:34 to go in the 1st quarter. Jacob VanLith threw a 20 yard pass to Boston Riedemann. The two point conversion came up short but the Wolverines led 12-0.
The final points of the quarter were compliments of a blocked punt by Boston Riedemann. It was set up by a great punt by Dain Moermond that pinned the Warriors on the 1 yard line. The Warrior offense wasn’t able to move the ball out and Boston came around left end and blocked the punt. The Warriors were able to recover it in the endzone.
The second half proved to be a defensive battle by both teams. Justice Frerk took over the quarterback position after Jacob VanLith suffered a shoulder injury. The Warriors did end up scoring with 7:20 to go in the game. It was set up by a long run. The extra point kick was good and the score was 14-7 at that point.
The Wolverine offense stalled and were forced to punt with 2:07 to go in the game. Dain punted another great punt but the returner fumbled the catch and Aaron Funkhouser jumped on the ball. We were able to run the clock out to finish out the game.
Justin Paulsen led in rushing with 14 carries for 65 yards. Jacob VanLith was 8-12 passing for 140 yards and a touchdown. Boston Riedemann led our receivers with 6 catches for 110 yards. Hudson Oolmann had 2 catches for 30 yards.
Keaton Sampson led all tacklers with 8 solos. Cole Cox finished with an interception and a fumble recovery.
Next week the Wolverines travel to Marcus for another District 1 matchup. We are going to have to play a little more disciplined up front. We are having trouble picking up the blitzing linebackers. MMCRU is a much improving team and we are going to have to keep getting better.
