Open house and tribute to Old Glory at Masonic Lodge – In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the writing of the Pledge of Allegiance, the officers and members of Sutherland Masonic Lodge No. 347 will host a Masonic Tribute to Old Glory on Sunday, April 26. A video will be shown commemorating the Pledge of Allegiance. The program will be held at the Masonic Temple on 2nd Street in Sutherland at 2:00 p.m. At the same time, the lodge will also hold a public open house in honor of their newly constructed lodge building. Everyone is invited to attend and to stay for a fellowship time which will follow the program.
Do your part at city clean-up time – Residents of Sutherland are encouraged to take pride in their property and community by doing their part in making Sutherland a more attractive place to live. This spring, take the time to paint, fix-up, and clean up your property. Remove debris around your home or business, haul old junk vehicles away, and keep your properly looking neat.
New owners take possession of Old P.O. in May – Back in 1974 a new business was opened in Sutherland. Dale & Shirley Mason transformed an empty building into a restaurant & lounge which became a well known night spot. The building, in it’s younger years, served as the community post office. Thus came about the name of Mason’s restaurant…the Old P.O. In 1974 the Old P.O. was sold to Paul & Earleen Jensen. It continued to thrive, especially with the addition of a 35×40 fool room in 1975. This expansion created a place where class reunions, receptions, family gatherings, and even business meetings could be held.
40 years ago – 1982
Election Results For Older Iowans Legislature – April 12, secret ballot elections were conducted throughout Northwest Iowa to elect six senior delegates to the 1982 session of the Older Iowans’ Legislature in November. The following individuals were chosen by their peers to represent the elderly constituents. District I – Lyon and Sioux Counties – Margaret Schroeder, Rock Valley. District II – Clay and O’Brien Counties – Marjorie McCulla, Sutherland. District III – Dickinson, Emmet and Osceola Counties – Frances Kloss, Armstrong. District IV – Buena Vista and Palo Alto Counties – Ina Hansen, Storm Lake. Two at-large positions representing all nine counties of Northwest Iowa – Dorothea Knittel, Milford, and Orville J. Lee, Ocheyedan.
School Bus Inspection Held at Sutherland School – The Sutherland Community School buses were checked by the Iowa State Patrol and the Department of Public Instruction on Monday, April 19. All five route buses, the Special Education station wagon, and the two spare buses passed the inspection.
50 years ago – 1974
P. O. Enjoys Full House To Meet Postmaster – Sutherland folk turned out April 21 to get acquainted with new Postmaster Duane Dybdahl and his family. The post office was a busy place as folk gathered to vsiit over coffee and cookies. Mr. Dybdahl and his family were present for the occasion. His family includes his wife Lavonne, his daughter Carol, who lives at home, his daughter Susan Geddes of Hinton, his daughter Sandra Ohl and husband Randy Ohl and granddaughter Kari Ann Ohl, also of Hinton, and Mrs. Dybdahl’s mother, Beulah Merchant.
Tigers Invited To Drake Relays – The Sutherland Tiger tracksters have been invited to participate in the world renowned Drake Relays, which will be’ held in Des Moines this week, which began yesterday, April 26. The meet director, Bob Ehrhart, has stated “This is probably the finest field we have had in quite a few years But then, this is an Olympic year.”
Supervisors To Meet Every Tuesday in May – The O’Brien County Board of Supervisors will be in session every Tuesday in May from 9 a.m. until all current business is tram sacted.
