Jazz Choir

Musicians from South O’Brien, Specializing in Jazz performance gave a rousing concert at Paullina First Presbyterian Church on Monday March 14. Two bands and the Jazz Choir performed for the packed sanctuary. They are directed by Rebecca Meyer.
Jazz II blasted 3 selections and included solos. “Georgia on my Mind” arranged by M. Sweeney featured Josh Gnade on trumpet, Chloe Hustedt on trumpet and Bensen Rohwer on alto sax. “Malaguena” also arranged by M. Sweeney featured Brett Evans, on trombone and Lydia Flinders on baritone sax. The final selection from the Jazz II performance was composed by K. Harris and featured Reese Farquhar on drums.
John Krager directs the Jazz Choir. The choir performed 3 pieces as well. The opened with “The Chorus Room Blues” arranged by D. Lantz III. The performance featured the voices of Chloe Gergen and Sydney Sickelka. “Imagine” arranged by P Rutherford introduced the crowd to the voices of Alyssa Harper and Aiden Ball. The final selection, “It’s All Right” arranged by R. Gibson from the Pixar moving, “SOUL,” gave the group the spot light together. The choir was accompanied on piano by Drew Werkmeister.
Jazz I, the competition band boasts 21 members in grades 7-12. The opened the competitive season on January 13 at the Triton Jazz Festival at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. Jazz I placed first in the opening competition with two members earning outstanding soloist: Sofia Leng and Grant Wagner.
Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Festival was held January 24 at Orange City. The competition band earned a Division I rating.
The Morningside College Jazz Festival in Sioux City is always one of the toughest competitions. It was held February 9. Jazz I placed 2nd. Leng and Wagner again earned outstanding solo awards.
The final competition was held February 21 at LeMars Public High School. The Northwest Iowa Band Association hosted the event. Jazz I placed 2nd and boasted 3 outstanding soloists. Dante Johnson joined Leng and Wagner.
South O’Brien Jazz I qualified for Iowa State Jazz Championships with their 2nd place finish at the District competition. They will face 15 Class 1A bands on Tuesday April 5 at the Scheman Building at the Iowa State Campus. They have a 1:15 time slot. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
Locally, Jazz I performed “Groovin Hard” featuring Grant Wagner, Sofia Leng and Kester Grimm from the saxophone section.
“’Round Midnight” featured Sofia Leng.
The evening wrapped up with “Children of Sanchez” featuring Kester Grimm (trumpet), Clair Wagner (flute), Elizabeth Grimm (trumpet), Sofia Leng (tenor sax), Dante Johnson (trombone) and Grant Wagner (bari sax).
