Roos places fourth for Sheldon/South O’Brien at State Wrestling Tourney
Jarrett Roos earned his way to the medals podium by finishing fourth at the State Wrestling Tournament held February 17-19 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Also competing for Sheldon/South O’Brien at Des Moines were Cason Johannes and Josh Hoffmann. Neither earned a place finish.
The Class 2A wrestlers claimed the mats for the opening session on Thursday. Roos got off to a good start at 170 pounds with an 11-0 major decision win over Collin Hoskins of Center Point-Urbana. The next action for the sophomore was a Friday morning rematch with Ethan DeLeon of Bishop Heelan. Roos had scored a tiebreaker win over the Crusader junior in the District 1st Place Match. This time it was DeLeon eking out a 3-2 win. The loss moved Roos into the consolation side of the bracket where he earned a 16-1 technical fall victory over Kyler Ricard of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. That win guaranteed the Orab sophomore a place on the medals podium.
Back at it again in the afternoon, Roos nearly scored another technical fall in his 15-1 major decision victory over Mack Seaba of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. With Saturday came a consolation semifinal match-up between Roos and West Liberty’s Drake Collins. Roos earned a spot in the 3rd Place Match by pinning the Comet junior in 4:52.
The 3rd Place Match pitted Roos against Vinton-Shellsburg senior Brady Ortner. The match was decided by the ultimate tiebreaker when Ortner scored a reversal to win 4-2. Roos concludes his season with a record of 45-6.
The first round opponent for Johannes at 145 pounds was Hunter Steffans of Sergeant-Bluff Luton. The Orab senior had beaten Steffans in the Districts and did so again at State, this time by way of a 6-1 decision. On Friday Johannes squared off against Saydel’s Austin Chally and it was Chally winning by fall in 4:56. The consolation round saw the end of Johannes’ tournament as he lost an 8-4 decision to Joshua Zeman of West Liberty. Johannes finishes the year at 40-7.
Hoffmann got his first taste of State Tourney competition when he took on sophomore Jayson Stevens of Hampton-Dumont-CAL. The 106-pound freshman lost by fall in 38 seconds. Later on Thursday, Hoffmann faced Isaac Wilson of Algona in a battle of freshmen. It was Wilson who stayed alive as he pinned the Orab grappler in 1:15. Hoffmann’s season ends with a record of 29-16.
Sheldon/South O’Brien scored 19.5 team points to finish alone in 32nd place.
