Hinton holds off Wolverine boys
Hinton turned a one-point halftime lead into a 12-point advantage after three quarters and held on to defeat South O’Brien 61-57 February 3 at Hinton. The contest was postponed from December 10 due to the inclement weather on that date. With the loss the Wolverines fall to 5-4 in the War Eagle Conference and 12-7 overall.
South O’Brien trimmed the Hinton lead to four points with just under five minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets with the Blackhawks passing the ball smartly to eat valuable seconds off the clock. A pair of free throws by Boston Riedemann cut the deficit to three at 58-55 with 40 seconds left. Hinton hit three charity tosses of their own before Jacob Van Lith’s two free throws with two seconds remaining accounted for the final margin.
Jake Wallin scored 24 points for the visitors, followed by Van Lith with 13, Hudson Oolman with eight, Riedemann with seven and Ben Woodall with five. Riedemann was the assists leader with two.
The Wolverines were more accurate from the field than Hinton. South O’Brien made 20 of its 41 shots for 49 percent. The Blackhawks were 21-of-51 for 41 percent. There was little to separate the teams from long range or from the free throw line. The Wolverines were 3-of-13 from three-point distance and 14-of-19 at the line. Hinton made four of its 16 trey attempts and 15 of its 20 free throws.
Van Lith and Wallin each pulled down five rebounds while Oolman and Sawyer Honkomp gathered in three apiece. Wallin blocked three shots and recorded the lone steal. There were only six Blackhawk turnovers. South O’Brien turned the ball over 14 times.
