Hot-shooting Wolverine boys take down Gehlen Catholic
South O’Brien equaled its best shooting game of the season in defeating Gehlen Catholic 60-44 January 28 at Paullina. The Wolverines were good on 25 of their 49 field goal attempts for 51 percent. In handing the Jays just their second War Eagle Conference loss, South O’Brien improved to 5-3 in the conference and 11-6 overall.
The Wolverines made an affective opening statement, moving out to a 21-8 lead after one quarter. They never allowed Gehlen to get back in the game, holding the visitors to 30 percent shooting (14-of-46) for the game.
Jake Wallin scored 16 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and passed for six assists. David Bottjen tallied 14 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists. Hudson Oolman’s stat line included 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Ben Woodall notched 11 points and two assists. Pete Bottjen added three points while Boston Riedemann contributed two points and two steals and Sawyer Honkomp two points and two assists. Keaten Bonderson scored 14 points to lead the Jays.
The victors drained five of their 12 three-point tries with Woodall going 3-for-5 and David Bottjen 2-for-3. Gehlen was just 4-of-21 from beyond the arc but the Jays did sink 12 of their 16 free throw tries. The Wolverines were 5-of-8 at the charity stripe. South O’Brien committed just three turnovers. The Jays turned the ball over 10 times.
