Gehlen Catholic golfers take two from Wolverines
by Coach Kris Faust • The South O’Brien Girls and Boys Golf Teams faced tough Gehlen Catholic teams at Primghar Golf Course on Thursday, April 11. It was the third meet of the week for the Wolverines, and it was a cool and windy night for golf. Gehlen took both matches, which puts the Wolverine boys and girls at 2-2 in the WEC Duals.
Sophomore Lindsey Einck shot a 51 to earn runner-up medalist honors. Sophomore Chloe Hustedt shot a 65 to place 7th. It was a tough night for the girls who faced a good Gehlen team. The penalty strokes and the greens hurt us tonight. We need to regroup and work on some things before our next meet.
Team Scores: Gehlen 214, South O’Brien 263.
Medalist: Rysaiah Sitzmann (Gehlen) 47, Runner-up: Lindsey Einck (SO’) 51, 3rd: McKenna Sitzmann (Gehlen) 54, 4th: Zoe Vacura (Gehlen) 54.
Other SO’ scores: Chloe Hustedt, 64, 7th; Raegan Plagge, 71, 9th; Shayli Johnson, 77, 10th.
The boys shot their best team score of the season, seven strokes under their season average. However, it just wasn’t good enough to beat Gehlen. Senior Aaron Funkhouser had a great night and carded another 43, taking the fourth place medal. It was the only medal the Wolverines would get. Derek Paulsen, David Bottjen, and Jace Kleinwoltrink all brought in cards in the mid-40s, but we need to get some golfers in the 30s if we want to compete with the top-level teams in the WEC.
Team Scores: Gehlen 164, South O’Brien 181.
Medalist: Dawson Barthole (Gehlen) 39, Runner up: Gabe Wiltgen (Gehlen) 39, 3rd: Carson Ames (Gehlen) 41, 4th: Aaron Funkhouser (SO’) 43.
Other SO’ Varsity Scores: Derel Paulsen, 44, 5th; David Bottjen, 47, 8th; Carter Halverson, 48, 10th; Jace Kleinwolterink, 47, 9th; Alex Griebel, 50, 12th.
SO’ JV Scores: Ryan Fuller 49, Trevor Fiddelke 52, Teagan Bahrenfuss 55, Reese Lundquist 61, Brady Riedemann 65, Nathan Harms 66.
