Sheldon/South O’Brien’s Jarrett Roos is State Wrestling Champion
In his last high school wrestling match for Sheldon/South O’Brien, Jarrett Roos reached the pinnacle. The Sheldon senior capped an undefeated season by winning the Class 2A State championship at 190 pounds.
Roos was in the spotlight on Championship Finals Saturday night at the State Wrestling Tournament held February 14-17 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. He faced off against sixth-seeded Ben Bryant of North Polk in the 1st Place Match, winning a 4-2 decision. Roos scored a two-point takedown in the first period and went up 3-0 with a second-period escape. A penalty was assessed to each wrestler for stalling making the final score 4-2.
The Orab wrestler finished his 28-0 campaign by ascending to the top spot of the podium where his father, Sheldon/South O’Brien head coach Kory Roos, had the honor of placing the first-place medal around his neck. The State champ was no stranger to the podium, having placed fourth as a sophomore and third last season. He earned a trip to State in his freshman year as well.
Josh Hoffmann also competed for Sheldon/South O’Brien at State. The Orab junior, making his second appearance at the State Tourney, lost his first match 17-4 to Charles City’s Jordan Young. The 126-pounder received a bye into the second round of the consolations but his tournament came to an end when he was pinned by Tyce Hanson of Okoboji/HMS in 56 seconds. Hoffmann finished the season with a record of 29-10.
On Wednesday Roos, the top-seeded 2A wrestler in his weight class, received a bye into the second round. There he won by fall over 17th-seeded Bryson Harris of Clarinda in 2:13.
With the seedings holding in the top half of the bracket, Roos faced the eighth seed, Troy Kupka of Benton Community in Thursday’s quarterfinal. The Orab senior won a 7-4 decision.
Friday was the day for semifinals and Roos was matched against fourth-seeded Kain Killmer of Perry. A takedown in the first period along with an escape and takedown in the second staked Roos to a 5-0 lead. A third-period takedown had Roos up 7-0. An escape and a takedown allowed Killmer to close the gap to 7-3 but Roos turned the trick himself to lead 10-3. A late reversal meant a 10-5 victory and Roos was on to Saturday night’s 1st Place Match and his championship.
