South O’Brien girls battle back but HMS gets the win

Once again it was South O’Brien facing a double-digit deficit. The Wolverines were 16 points behind Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn early in the third quarter. They then scored 10 straight points to close the gap, but HMS was able to regain its mojo and go on to pick up a 56-39 War Eagle Conference win February 6 at Hartley. With the loss, South O’Brien finishes 2-8 in the conference, tied for ninth place.
The Wolverines shot 22 percent with 12 baskets in 54 attempts. They were just 2-of-18 from three-point range and they made 13 of 29 free throw tries. HMS was 19-of-53 from the floor for 36 percent. The Hawks hit five of their 18 three-point tries and 13 of 25 free throws.
The balanced South O’Brien scoring showed Reese Farquhar with eight points, Addison Hedberg and Marissa Ebel with seven apiece, Chloe Hustedt with six, Abby Nelson with five, Jaylah Jackson with four and Lindsey Einck with two. Nelson, Hedberg and Hustedt each assisted on two baskets.
Farquhar was the top rebounder with 10 boards. Hustedt collected eight rebounds with Hustedt and Einck each grabbing five. Hedberg and Ebel made two steals apiece and Ebel, Hustedt and Farquhar each blocked a shot. The turnovers were nearly even as HMS turned the ball over 18 times and the Wolverines 17.
